Do LED grow lights get as hot as HPS grow lights?

The electroluminescence technology of LED is completely different, and it can emit light without heating; The LED itself will not be hot enough to cause a fire… The less energy consumed, the less heat; For a given growth area, LED grow lights emit less heat than any equivalent artificial light.

One of the biggest differences between LED and HPS is radiant heat… In addition, HPS will provide about 34% of the energy in the wavelength of visible light, while LED will provide 40-50% of its BTU energy in the form of visible light (which is also the reason for higher efficiency of LED grow lights).

HPS / MH can operate at extremely high temperatures – 30000c / 54000f. Most of the heat is converted into infrared radiation. Infrared is a kind of radiation. When it hits molecules, it will cause molecules to vibrate and heat. This infrared ray will directly irradiate your plants like visible light radiation.

The 100 watt GLS incandescent bulb consumes about 12% of the energy, 83% of the infrared and 5% of the visible light. In contrast, a typical LED grow light may produce 15% visible light and 85% heat. Especially for high-power LED grow lights, it is very necessary to eliminate this heat through effective thermal management.

In short, whether HPS lamp, LED light or CFL light, the heat generated per watt is roughly the same. However, in order to achieve the same cannabis growing effect, the power of HPS grow lights needs to be increased several times to produce more heat.

Emitting too much heat is an inevitable problem. In fact, any lamp will generate heat when it is powered on, but the heat generated by HPS lamp is particularly prominent, which is several times that of CFL and LED lamp. This makes any HPS with more than 500W need exhaust system, and this problem has not been effectively solved until now.
