What is High Pressure Sodium Light (HPS Grow Lights)?

High pressure sodium vapor lamp (HPS), similar to LPS lamp, is a special type of gas discharge lamp (also known as high intensity discharge, HID or arc). The main difference between low-pressure sodium lamp and high-pressure sodium lamp is the working pressure in the lamp.

High pressure sodium lamp (HPS) has been widely used in industrial lighting, especially in large manufacturing facilities, usually used as plant growth grow lamps. They contain mercury. They are also widely used in outdoor area lighting, such as roads, parking lots and safe areas.

High pressure sodium lamps are less energy efficient than LEDs. In fact, LED bulbs consume 40-75% less power than HPS lamps.

Most experience cannabis growers recommend using LED grow lights and HPS grow lights at the same time. LED grow lamp is most suitable for vegetative growth and flowering period, while HPS grow lights is more suitable for flowering.

The cost of HPS grow lamps varies with specific lamps, but it is lower than that of LED grow lights ( grow lamps). However, they are very fragile and operate with glass bulbs, so they are not safe in dangerous or explosive environments. This makes the maintenance and replacement cost much higher than that of LED grow lights and more comparable with metal halide.

The Advantages of HPS grow light is that HPS is the most efficient member of the HID grow lamp family. Its efficiency is 7 times that of incandescent grow lamp and more than 2 times that of mercury vapor. Also it with lower cost than LED Grow Lights and more suitable for cannabis flowering stage.
